Our Modern Dance Programs

Intro to Modern / Modern 1 (Ages 7-10)

This class explores the elements of space, time, and energy. Classes include floor work, standing center technique, improvisation, and traveling movement. Dancers are encouraged to have fun, create, and use critical thinking skills. No previous experience required.

Modern 2 (Ages 10-18)

In this class, students begin introductory level studies focused primarily on the Lester Horton Technique, they will also explore other modern dance foundational movement practices. Focusing on attention to detail and proper alignment through the Horton Warm-Up and the beginning fortifications and studies. The vocabulary of this class will become more challenging each week, as we begin to use the technique to create longer movement phrases as the year progresses. Along with building a strong technical foundation, we will focus on building confidence, flexibility, movement quality, musicality, and strength. It is suggested that the student pairs Modern 2 with a placed ballet level.

Modern 3 (Ages 10-18)

In this class, students expand on the principles of the Lester Horton Technique and Martha Graham Technique. They will also begin to explore other movement practices in modern and contemporary dance, as well as improvisational studies. Dancers are encouraged to think anatomically and critically about movement. This class is designed to continue in creating a strong technical foundation while enhancing balance, coordination, flexibility, and turn out. This class will begin to develop the young artist’s sense of artistry. Ballet experience is required and mandatory for this level. Students must have been placed in Modern 3, or demonstrate appropriate skills in a Park Hill Dance Academy placement class.

Modern 4 (Ages 12-18)

In this class, students focus on advanced variations of the Lester Horton Technique and Martha Graham Technique. They will also explore other movement practices in modern dance and contemporary movement, as well as focusing on improvisational and choreographic studies. Dancers are expected to think anatomically and critically about movement, and are also expected to present a strong technical foundation. The emphasis is placed on artistry and performance quality, while finding ways to execute movement through different dynamics, qualities, and speed. Ballet experience is required and mandatory for this level. Students must have been placed in Modern 4, or demonstrate appropriate skills in a Park Hill Dance Academy placement class.

Modern Dance Dress Code:

Female: Black Colored leotard or Unitard. Black footless tights. Hair in a ponytail, away from face.

Male: Black Fitted T-Shirt or Black Colored Leotard or Unitard. Black footless tights. Dance Belt.

Our Aerial Dance Programs

Aerial Dance Level 1

This class is an introduction to aerial dance. Students will learn beginner, foundational moves, and how to weave them together into sequences. This class will help build strength, flexibility, musicality, and technique. No previous aerial training required. Class age requirement is 9 and up.

Dress Code: Leotard and Leggings

Aerial Dance Level 2

This class builds on the material learned in Level 1, providing students with a wider vocabulary and understanding of aerial dance. Students will build on skills learned in Level 1 and begin to learn movement transitions. Dancers will also learn how to put aerial choreography to music, while continuing to build strength, flexibility, musicality, and technique. Must be able to invert and have taken aerial dance level 1 at least six months. Age group 10 and up.

Aerial Dance Level 3

Aerial dance level 3 builds on the material learned in Level 2, providing students with a stronger vocabulary and understanding of aerial dance. Dancers will continue to work on putting aerial choreography to music, smooth transitions, and more difficult choreography. Dancers will continue to build strength, flexibility, musicality, and technique. Must be working on inverting in the air and have taken aerial dance level 2 for a year. Age group 12 and up.

Our Jazz Programs

Jazz Dance

This style of dance will address both classical and contemporary jazz styles. Dancers will dive into use of rhythm, and expression throughout the class. Warm up consists of classical technique, isolations, and getting the heart rate up. They will practice movements traveling across the floor, and learn various combinations in jazz forms. Students will explore improvisation, and choreography to help further develop their passion and style as a dancer. There are 3 levels of Jazz dance classes. Beginner ages 6-9, Intermediate ages 9-14, and advanced ages 15-18. Please wear leotard, leggings and suede bottomed jazz shoes, ballet shoes, or socks.
